Behind the Scenes of Beastie
Hey there, I'm Megan.
I grew up in California and loved visiting the ocean. As a kid, I was obsessed with dolphins, horses, and sea shells (though that hasn't changed much). Pirates, in the fantasy sense, were my Santa Claus; I thought they were real. Some of my favorite movies included Goonies, the Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Princess Bride, and Pirates of the Caribbean (all of which are favorites today). I shared my mother's love of anything ocean, pirate or nautical and often received ocean-themed gifts and sea shells from my surfer bro uncle. To sum it all up, the lightness, adventure, and joy I've felt from everything nautical fantasy––and from the wonders of the ocean itself––makes these illustrations happen.
About the Illustrations...
This series started after I entered a design into a contest and lost. Though my sea serpent didn't win, I got to keep ownership (which worked out because I was growing more fond of the little illustration as time went on). One day I felt like drawing a sea horse to match, then it become a fun personal art challenge to continue. It all started to develop into a series, forming a brand all its own. The ending of the second POTC gave me a name idea, and I ran with it. I decided to try printing the illustrations on some products and took them to some craft fairs. The art seemed to amuse people greatly, so I thought why not keep going. And here we are.
